ACO Introduction to Umpiring The ECB this year has introduced a new course called an ‘Introduction to Umpiring’. No prior experience of umpiring in cricket is required. Whether you plan to support junior softball cricket through to adult cricket, this course is designed to give new umpires the key skills, knowledge and confidence to stand as an umpire in cricket.
Once completed it will also allow you to join the umpire pathway and eventually, if you choose to, progress to umpiring at league panel (see pathway below_
The introduction to umpiring course covers the following topics:
Understanding the role of the umpire
Gain a basic understanding of umpiring the game
Answering appeals and the common methods of dismissal
How to communicate effectively with all stakeholders in the game
Judging whether or not it is safe to play
This course is preceded by 90 minutes of online modules.
To join the umpire pathway you must attend this course.
Venue and dates to be announced soon. Course dates expected to commence in January 2024.
This course cost £70.
ACO Umpire Progression Course* This course is ideal for those wishing to become the best umpire they can and an essential part of your development as a competent club umpire or becoming a member of the Shropshire County Cricket League (SCCL) umpires panel. This course will significantly expand your understanding of the Laws of cricket and your ability to analyse and apply SCCL league match regulations. It is expected that in the Shropshire County Cricket Premier and Division One league games it will be a requirement that the umpire has completed this course Venue and dates to be announced soon.
*You should not book this course unless you have already completed the ECB ‘Introduction to Umpiring’ course.
The Umpire pathways The ECB has introduced a new education and development programme for men’s and women’s cricket. A new ECB Umpiring Course will give you a basic understanding of umpiring a game and place you at Level 6 (see pathway diagram aside). If you want to become an ECB Accredited Umpire you must attend the ECB Umpiring Course. To progress to the next level (men 5 or women 4) you will need to have umpired a minimum of 5 matches and completed the MCC Basic Level Laws Exam.

Shropshire Association of Cricket Officials (SACO) understand the importance that scorers play in the success of cricket in Shropshire. As a result SACO are committed to encourage the introduction of new scorers as well as the development and progression of existing scorers.
So whether you want to umpire your club in matches at senior, junior or soft-ball cricket or whether you wish to progress through to scoring county academy or county age group cricket matches, Cricket Shropshire matches and festivals there are opportunities that exist. There are a number of scoring courses are available whether you are new to scoring or simply want to find out more, through to ‘advanced scorer’ courses:
Access online Basic Scoring Course to provide the skills to start scoring.
Join the Club Scorer Course – How to record a match to teach you how to score and obtain Level 1 after scoring a minimum of ten matches and getting colleague feedback for your scoring portfolio.
Level 2 – Planning and preparation for experienced club scorers. Score another ten matches and attend a DLS Continuous Professional Development (CPD) module. Professional discussion with a Scorer Development Officer referring to your portfolio.
Level 3 – Advanced Scorer – for those scorers who successfully completed Level 2, attended the Linear Scoring CPD module and aspire to score at the highest levels including multi day cricket.
Scorers SACO delivers the following club scorer and electronic scoring courses locally:
ECBACO Club Scorer – How to record a cricket match for beginners and existing scorers who score regularly.
ECBACO Electronic Scoring – This module teaches existing scorers how to use Play-Cricket Scorer Pro software package.
The following courses are delivered regionally at Edgbaston:
ECBACO Level 1 – Achieved after scoring ten matches on completion of the Club Scorer course and obtaining colleague feedback for portfolio..
ECBACO Level 2 – Advanced Scoring Areas – Planning and Preparation. Score further ten matches, obtain DLS module. Professional Discussion with portfolio.
ECBACO Level 3 – Advanced Scorer – Multi Day Cricket, observation and professional discussion reviewing portfolio.
ECBACO Duckworth Lewis Stern Module – Explanation of DLS method of setting revised targets when play is suspended and the difference between various DLS formats.
ECBACO Linear Scoring Module – Completion of Linear Scoresheet with large practical element of scoring a pre-recorded match as a back up to scoring electronically.
